Success Stories

BLANCA'S STORY:

Blanca was one of the first students to attend the Rosalie Rendu Center's free ESL classes. She was shy, uncertain and nervous about learning English. After six months she discontinued the class stating that she would never be able to learn a new language. After two years Blanca began working in the Tot Spot, assisting the Jr. League Volunteers. Today you will encounter a different Blanca. She is no longer shy and through her association with the League Volunteers has learned English, despite herself, and is very comfortable with English speakers. She has become very confident and able to lead the Tot Spot activities in the absence of a League member. We are very proud of Blanca and the progress she has made.

LORETTA'S STORY:

Loretta came to the Center having good English skills and lacking self-esteem. She was unaware of her abilities and was sad much of the time. When a call came to the Director for a woman to work at Caser Chavez School as a Parent Involvement Worker, an interpreter between the English speaking teachers and the Spanish-speaking parents, Loretta immediately came to mind. After much encouragement and persuasion, from the Director, Loretta took the job with fear and nervousness. She began working ten hours a week. After six months Loretta was self-confident, at peace with herself and very happy. Besides being happy the teachers, with whom she worked were very pleased with her services. She started four years ago and continues to work at Caser Chavez school, she is now the team leader with two other PIWs.
