JOB TITLE: English as a Second Language Teacher

Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Non-Exempt/Part Time/Evening

The Rosalie Rendu Center https://www.rosalie-rendu-center.org/ is a non-profit organization which offers, free of charge, adult English as a Second Language and Citizenship Test Preparation classes to residents of East Palo Alto and neighboring communities. Our mission is to open opportunities for adult English language learners to integrate linguistically, socially, economically, and culturally into their communities. Our vision is that the Rosalie Rendu Center will inspire, educate, and promote the overall well-being of immigrants and their families through classroom and online learning, social activities, and family outings into the community. The Rosalie Rendu Center is a ministry of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, in Los Altos Hills, California.

Position Summary

The ESL teacher develops and facilitates effective beginner level ESL instruction with the goal of preparing adults to achieve English language proficiency and cultural competence so that their ability to contribute to their family and community may be strengthened and broadened; evaluates progress; creates a supportive learning environment; and promotes and implements the mission and vision of the Rosalie Rendu Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develops and presents lessons that demonstrate planning and preparation and that are tailored to the needs of the ESL learner.
2. Develops learners’ English language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
3. Uses a variety of instructional techniques and materials including online resources that are appropriate to the course and accommodate all learning styles.
4. Demonstrates an awareness and respect for adult learners’ individual differences, needs, and abilities.
5. Creates a supportive classroom learning environment.
6. Evaluates and records learners’ performance and progress.
7. Maintains current and accurate records of learners’ attendance.
8. Plans and coordinates the work of volunteers, when applicable.
9. Keeps up to date in subject area and continually works for the improvement of instructional techniques.
10. Shares ideas, techniques, and materials as appropriate with other staff members.
11. Attends staff meetings and staff development sessions in addition to the teaching assignment hours.
12. Other hours and assignments as determined by the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications

1. BA and TESOL certificate; knowledge and experience working with adult English Language Learners.
2. Ability to work with staff in a collaborative, productive, and supportive manner.
3. Able to use computers and other technologies to support learning.
4. Ability to engage learners at a high level to promote learning.
5. Adept at fostering and cultivating community among learners.

Physical Requirements

• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard
• Seeing to read a variety of materials
• Hearing and speaking to exchange information
• Sitting for extended periods of time
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects up to 20 pounds
• Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to shelve and retrieve materials
• Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally

Compensation: $40.00/Hour

Days/Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 6:00pm-8:00pm
